EPISODE 002: MEET THE SOCIETY!
In the sanctuary conference room we find a six-pack of concerned “Society” members sitting around a table, while eating an extra-large pizza from the Capital City Bakery. These agents have adopted operative “street names” for reasons that remain classified.
The roll call:
Alex Adams aka “Alcoholman” also known on the streets as “The Intoxicated Detective.” Due to a government experiment in the United States Navy, Adams experiences enhanced abilities when he drinks different types of alcoholic beverages.
Eddie Crossbones aka “The Living Skeleton” is perhaps the most bizarre and frightening of the anomalies you will find in the Society. He is in fact, a walking-talking skeleton, a contradiction to science, logic, and reason. Yet, he lives; he breathes …
Lucy Hell aka “Devilgirl.” People often see her in ways that may not be true to reality—as she has an “influence” over people’s perceptions, a currently unclassified type of “mind control.”
Well, if I said Eddie Crossbones was the most bizarre Society member I may not have considered …
Paul Kowalski aka “Pig-Man.” Paul Kowalski, once a would-be football star, was turned into a human/pig hybrid on the isle of “Retroshima” by a descendant of the infamous Dr. Moreau.
Agent Yuki Yoko Yoshimoto, [no street name, an inside operator] computer expert and staff member hired by The Atlantis Corporation to run the communications center of the Sanctuary.
The Kid aka “Kid Telepathy,” real name classified. The Kid is a level 13 psychic and ward to Society founding member: “Dr. Atlantis.”
Pig-Man set his slice down and grunted. “You okay, Kid?”
The Kid looked up from his pizza and shrugged his shoulders. “I’m … not sure. I was … I got these flashes, really strong stuff, of a creature, a being of …”
“Yeah,” said Pig-Man, “what kind of a being?”
“Evil,” said the Kid.
“That’s kind of speculative,” said Adams, “don’t ya think?”
“No,” said the Kid. “Whatever ‘evil’ is, it’s pretty much inside this thing.”
Lucy reached for a thin slice of the hot pizza. “Didn’t you,” she asked, “say it was like … here already?”
“Yeah, I felt that, like it was right inside the room with Agent Yoshimoto and myself, like it was going to do something to us …”
Pig-Man interrupted: “You talkin bout a ghost, Kid?”
“I don’t know,” he said, “are ghosts shaped like mushroom people?”
Eddie Crossbones dropped his pizza onto his plate and let out a creepy laugh: “Hahahahahahaha, good one, Kid.”
[Editor’s note: Yes, Crossbones does eat and drink. His senses are alive despite the lack of flesh and everything that goes through his mouth ends up in a garbage bag concealed inside his trench coat].
“Wait a minute,” said Adams, “are you saying this thing—that’s supposedly coming to get us—looks like a mushroom man?”
“He is the Mushroom Man,” said the Kid.
“So,” said Lucy, “he’s like a mushroom guy with arms and legs …”
“And an axe,” said Adams, “right, Kid?”
“Yeah, yes, that’s right! How’d you know?”
“He’s real,” said Adams. “He’s real and I’ve seen him before.”
[We'll have to tell you Society lovers that backstory some other time. Meanwhile ...]
Eddie laughed again.
“Not funny, Ed. He’s real, all right, and he can twist your mind like a soft pretzel, really send you to the funny farm, but I’ll tell you one thing …”
“What’s that?” said Pig-Man.
“He can’t get to you unless you’ve actually eaten some mushrooms. The Kid must have just poked a hole, mentally, into the mushroom reality, and luckily, snapped back out, but he can only draw you in when you’ve been eating …”
They all froze at that moment, then slowly looked down at the pizza on their plates, a vegetarian special: tomatoes, garlic, olives, and mushrooms.
